Aalst Castle

Aalst Castle is a former castle which was situated in the village of Aalst, in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.

Aalst Castle was first mentioned in 870 AD and was, probably around that time, built by Boudewijn II, Lord of Heusden. His castle is said to have been a keep with walls of 2 m thick. Boudewijn supposedly also founded the castles of Brakel and Poederoijen. During its lifetime the castle has been owned by the Van Lynden family, amongst others.

Apparently it was already a ruin in the 17th century. The last visible remnants of the castle were demolished in 1875. Depictions of the castle show it as a probably square or rectangular castle with  a wide moat.

I don't know who is the author of the top drawing. It looks very similar to the first drawing in the gallery below. One or the other probably used the other as an example.

I could not find any other historical info about this castle. If you know more, please mail me.

At present nothing remains of Aalst Castle. On the site where the castle once stood is now a primary school.
