Bolaman Castle

Bolaman Castle

Bolaman Castle, locally known as Bolaman Kalesi, lies in the small town of the same name, in the province of Ordu in Turkey.

Nothing is known about the history of Bolaman Castle. It does not get mentioned in medieval sources.

It was built upon a rock, which used to be an island just off the coast. Its stone walls seem to point to it having been a Byzantine fortification. A small church is partly incorporated into its walls, but if the church predates the fortification, or the other way around, is unknown.

In the early 19th century, the interior of the church and the fortification were partially filled in. Several structures, amongst which the wooden one, were then built on top of the walls and filled-in area, turning it into an Ottoman residence of the local bey.

Bolaman Castle can not be visited, as it seems to be a complex of private residences. Although I have seen some mentions of it having been a small hotel.
