Eibenstein Castle

Eibenstein Castle, locally known as Burg Eibenstein, lies near the hamlet of the same name, southeast of the village of Drosendorf an der Thaya in the province of Lower Austria in Austria.

Eibenstein Castle was probably built in the 12th century on a steep rock guarding a crossing of the Thaya river.

Until 1543 Eibenstein Castle was owned by the Eibenstein family, then it went to the Lords of Schreckenreith. Later it belonged to the lordship of Drosendorf.

During the 16th century the castle fell into neglect.

In 1867 the southern facade of the ruin collapsed during a storm and fell into the river below.

The website of Eibenstein Castle describes the ruin in great detail but does not provide much historical info. In fact I could not find much historical info anywhere on the net. So if you know more, please mail me.

The ruin of Eibenstein Castle is freely accessible. A short walk from the road takes you to this nice castle ruin. It's a little off the beaten track.
