I visited this castle in 2002.
Pflixbourg Castle lies southwest of the village of Wintzenheim in the Haut-Rhin
province in France. This area is also known as the Southern Alsace or the Vosges.
Pflixbourg Castle occupies a, 454 meters high, mountaintop on the southern side
of the Fecht valley. A couple of kilometers to the southeast lies Haut-Landsbourg Castle.
The castle is first mentioned in 1220, under the name of "Blickisberc". It was
probably not constructed a long time before, between 1212 and 1219. After 1434
Pflixbourg Castle doesn't get mentioned anymore and archeological excavations
carried out at the site, prove that the castle wasn't inhabited anymore after
the 15th century.
Nowadays the castle remains are very much overgrown and access is restricted
because of the danger of falling stones. There are remains of living quarters
against the inside of the curtain wall. Its narrow shaped entrance is guarded
by the cylindrical keep which still stands to its original height of 22 meters.
At the foot of the keep there is a cistern.
I found the castle to be of considerable size but to much overgrown to see much
detail. Nonetheless it's a nice stop if you're on your way to Haut-Landsbourg Castle.
