We visited this castle in 2006.
Hrastovlje Castle lies atop a small hill next to the village of the same name in Slovenia, south of
the Ialian city of Triëst.
To be honest this isn't a real castle but actually a fortified church. But it sure looks great.
This Roman Church of the Holy Trinity dates back to the 12th-14th century. Only its sacristy was
built in the 19th century. The inside of the church is decorated with beautiful fresco's from the
13th century. In the 16th century the Turks besieged this area and to protect the church, the
castle-like curtain wall was built, with only two round towers on opposite corners, one of which is
guarding the gate.
The inside of the church can be visited for a small fee. I could not find any other historical info
about this site, so if anyone knows more, please mail me!
So although this is not a 'real' castle I like its appearance a lot.
