A little history

Well, the history I have been able to find about this castle is very little indeed. Presumably this small, moated castle was built around 1300 AD. However, it was first mentioned in 1403 when it was presented to the Counts of Gelre by the family of Johan van Aem or Ambe. These counts used the castle as a hunting lodge so it probably never served as a real castle.

In the 18th century the eastside of the castle was rebuilt and turned into a residential wing. So nowadays only the westside of the building has a medieval appearance.

In 1944 the castle suffered considerable damage due to wartime activity. After the war it was restored in 18th century style and now serves as a town hall for the people of Bemmel.
