St. Mark Tower

St. Mark Tower

St. Mark Tower, locally known as Kula svetog Marka, lies in the city of Trogir, in the county of Split-Dalmatia in Croatia.

Trogir is a city situated on a, somewhat, rectangular island in a sea channel between Čiovo island and the mainland. It was a fortified city, and originally the site of the present tower was just the northwest corner of the city walls.

Construction of the tower started in 1470, by the Venetians, and progressed slowly as it was only finished at the end of the 15th century. Originally, the sturdy tower connected to the north and west city walls and was almost surrounded by water. The tower was at first also topped by a parapet, but this had already disappeared by the first half of the 17th century.

The circular tower has 2 stories with walls up to 3 meters thick.

In the recent past it seems to have been used as a small bar, but at present it stands abandoned and can not be accessed. A nice tower, too bad that you can not get in. Nearby is also the early 15th century Kamerlengo Castle. The old city with its alleyways and historical buildings is also worth a visit.
