Mellet Tower

Mellet Tower, locally known as Donjon de Mellet, stands in the center of the village with the same name, in the province of Hainaut in the Wallonia region in Belgium.

It is sure that no fortification existed here in 1210 as the Duke of Brabant, explicitly forbade the construction of such an edifice here. Probably Mellet Tower was built at the end of the 13th century, although the first mention of a keep at Mellet dates back to 1350.

Probably during the 16th century the keep became part of a larger, more comfortable castle. The present annexes are the remains of that castle.

Possession of Mellet Tower passed through the Glymes, Witthem, Croÿ and Spanghen families, until 1791 when it was sold to the Clauwez-Briant family. In 1862 it was acquired by the local community.

Up until 1946 it was surrounded by a moat.

At present the buildings annexed to Mellet Tower serve as a village school. The tower itself seems not to have any use. I am very curious about its interior.
