About this section.

As you can see elsewhere on this site, there are quite a considerable number of medieval castles in the Netherlands. I know their number isn't as large or their appearance as tough and grim as in other European countries, but at least they're still here. Which can't be said for a lot of other castles, because in the Middle Ages their number was far, far greater. These castles or their ruins are now lost to us because they were destroyed during wars (from the Middle Ages up to the Second World War), vanished beneath the waves during floodings or were neglected after which they were deliberately torn down for their stones (this happened on a large scale in the 18th and 19th century). Yes, in the Netherlands historical understanding is clearly something of the latter part of the 20th century. And still it isn't as good as in countries like the UK.

Of most of these lost castles or castle ruins we don't know how they looked like, apart from some educated guesswork based on excavations. Of some others we do, thanks to contemporary artists. In this Lost Castles section you'll be shown the lost castles of which I've found images, together with some historical info.

Take a look and you'll see some great images of fine castles lost forever.
