Nutjak Castle

Nutjak Castle

Nutjak Castle, locally known as Utvrda Nutjak, lies south of the village of Gardun, in the county of Split-Dalmatia in Croatia.

Nutjak Castle was built at the end of the 15th century by Žarko Dražojević, Duke of Poljica. In 1492, Pope Innocent VIII devoted resources collected during a pilgrimage to Klis and Sinj to the upkeep of Nutjak.

Although the castle, situated on a cliff above the right bank of the Cetina River, served to protect the historical county of Poljica from Ottoman incursions, it was already conquered by them in the early 16th century. It stayed in Turkic hands until 1685, when it was forcibly taken from them during the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War. The castle was destroyed in the process and never rebuilt.

Nutjak Castle is freely accessible. It can easily be reached by first a drive over a dust road, followed by a short walk through the woods. A nice, lonely castle ruin on a great location.
