Ras Al Hadd Castle

Ras Al Hadd Castle

Ras Al Hadd Castle lies in the village of the same name, in the Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate in Oman.

The village of Ras Al Hadd is situated at a cape where the Gulf of Oman meets the Arabian Sea. This location made that several powers wanted to control this sandy coastal strip of land between the sea and the Ras Al Hadd Lagoon. To protect their lands against foreign occupation, local tribes built Ras Al Hadd Castle between 1560 and 1590. A tower at the shore of the lagoon aided in the castle's defensive role.

The castle has a square ground plan with 2 round towers at its northern corners. There is a larger square tower, topped by a round tower, in the midst of the southern curtain wall. It probably served as some sort of keep.

Ras al Hadd Castle can be visited for free during opening hours. A nice castle, albeit a bit empty.
