Al Wishayl Castle

Al Wishayl Castle lies in the village of the same name in the Al Batinah South Governorate in Oman.

I suspect the castle was built as the fortified core of the village sometime during the 18th or even 19th century. It has a square plan with 2 round and one square corner tower. It seems to have been enlarged at some point, when a new walled area was added to its north side. That is also where the present gate is. Underneath the east wall of the castle runs a falaj, which is still in use.

Al Wishayl Castle is freely accessible. The west part of the castle however is still inhabited, sections of the north part also. The rest of the interior is all ruined.
