Acoz Castle

Chateau d'Acoz

Acoz Castle, locally known as Château d'Acoz and sometimes as Pirmez Castle, lies in the village of the same name, in the province of Hainaut in the Wallonia region in Belgium.

Acoz Castle dates back to the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century. It was probably built by the De Marotte family who had acquired the seigneury in 1543.

The castle passed to the De Quiévrain family in 1727. Through inheritance it went to Jacques d'Udekem in 1759. His son sold it to the Pirmez family in 1860. The Pirmez' held on to it until 2001 when they sold the castle to Tony Cammaert, an antiques dealer from Antwerp. Cammaert restored the castle and put it up for sale again in 2019 for 5.5 million euros. Apparently he has not found a buyer yet.

Acoz Castle, situated in the valley of the Biesme stream, has a square ground plan. Its moat is fed by the Biesme. The solitary tower on the northwest corner is all that remains of the original 16th century castle. The 2 wings to the east and south may also partly date back to that time but were extensively transformed during the 18th and 19th century.

At present Acoz Castle is a private residence and thus can not be visited. It has several halls which can be rented for marriages and alike. A nice castle even though it has a somewhat austere appearance.
