Akhaltsikhe Castle

Akhaltsikhe Castle lies on a steep hill in the village of the same name, in the Kaspi municipality in the Shida Kartli region in Georgia.

I was not able to find any information about Akhaltsikhe Castle. Searching for information was also not made easy because a city with the same name in the Samtskhe–Javakheti region to the southwest, also harbors a (more famous) castle; Rabati Castle. So if you know anything; please mail me.

Akhaltsikhe Castle has a rectangular ground plan with remains of 4 circular corner towers and a larger circular tower in the midst of its west wall. Maybe this larger tower served as keep. At some point in time the hill and the castle ruin came to be used as the village graveyard. So, especially inside the castle walls, the hill is strewn with those typical stone coffin-like gravestones.

Akhaltsikhe Castle is freely accessible. A simple castle ruin but together with the graveyard a nice site.
