Atalaião Tower

Atalaião Tower

The Atalaião Tower, locally known as Torre do Atalaião, lies in the town of Portalegre in the Alto Alentejo region in Portugal.

Not much is known about the Atalaião Tower. Based on architectural details it is thought to date back to the late 13th century, and thus would be contemporary with Portalegre Castle, or to the 14th century.

It seems to have been reformed in the course of the Portuguese Restoration War in the mid-17th century, or in the early 18th century. It was probably abandoned during the 18th century.

Part of the ruined tower collapsed in 1996, taking down the upper floor entrance.

The tower has a square plan and is situated on a hill above the town.

Sadly enough, the Atalaião Tower can not be visited, as it is situated on a seemingly abandoned private property. It can partly be seen from the public road running next to it.
