Aurec Castle

Aurec Castle, locally known as Château d'Aurec, lies in the village of Aurec-sur-Loire in the Haute-Loire department in France.
The original fortress was built on a rocky outcrop above the Loire River, by the counts of Forez in the 11th century. It was later enlarged in stone, mainly between the 12th and 16th centuries. The castle remained in noble hands for centuries, including the Fustier family, and served both defensive and residential purposes.
Major changes were made during the 15th and 16th centuries. Several rooms were fitted with decorated woodwork, painted walls, and stucco ceilings. The castle was surrounded by formal gardens, some of which survive in the current park.
Today, Aurec Castle is owned by the commune. It has been partly restored and now houses the tourist information office, a public library, event spaces, and a permanent multimedia exhibition about its history. The park is open to visitors, and parts of the castle can be visited during the season for a fee. The castle also hosts tours, workshops, and cultural events.
A pleasant, small village castle, too bad it was closed when I visited. The village itself is also worth a visit, with parts of its medieval ramparts still remaining.
