Ballyglasheen Castle

Ballyglasheen Castle

Ballyglasheen Castle lies in the townland of the same name, in County Limerick, in Ireland.

The castle dates back to the late 16th century and in 1640 it was owned by a Dorothy Shea, but inhabited by her tenant John Grove. That is all the historical information I was able to find, if you know more; please let me know.

The castle is essentially a stronghouse, or fortified house. It has a rectangular plan with a semicircular turret containing a spiral staircase at the northeast corner, a circular bartizan on the corner diagonally opposite, whilst the entrance doorway is defended by a machicolation directly overhead. Next to it is a farmyard that is enclosed by a stone wall which is possibly a bawn contemporary with the castle.

Ballyglasheen Castle is situated on the premises of a private residence and thus can not be visited, but can easily be seen from the public road.
