Barengo Castle

Barengo Castle

Barengo Castle, locally known as Castello di Barengo, lies in the village of the same name, in the Novara province in the Piedmont region in Italy.

The first mention of a fortification on this hill was during the 14th century.

The present castle was founded inside the older fortification, occupying one-third of the area. It was built during the 15th century by the Counts of Tornielli who gained the territories of Briona, Barengo and Maggiore as a fief in 1449 from the Duke of Milan; Francesco I Sforza. The castle at nearby Briona is contemporary with Barengo. They also held the nearby castle at Proh.

The Torniellis built Barengo not only to serve a military role but also as a pleasant country residence. They would own the castle until the early 18th century. By that time Barengo Castle had been abandoned and fallen into deterioration as a result of recurrent plague epidemics ravaging the area during the 17th century.

In the mid-20th century the deteriorated castle was reconstructed according to the stylistic canons of the Middle Ages. Further restorations were carried out later by the current owners; the Boroli family.

Barengo Castle is a private residence and thus can not be visited. A nice castle.
