Bellevue-la-Montagne Castle

Bellevue-la-Montagne Castle

Bellevue-la-Montagne Castle, locally known as Château de Bellevue-la-Montagne, lies in the village of the same name in the Haute-Loire department in France.

Bellevue-la-Montagne Castle was built before 1442 by Yves de Tourzel. The Tourzels were a branch of the barons of Allègre. Through marriage, it later passed to the Quesnel family, who carried out work on it in the 16th century. The castle was damaged during the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century.

The castle is also known as Castel de Saint‑Just, after the former name of the village, which was called Saint‑Just until the late 19th century, before adopting the current name Bellevue‑la‑Montagne. The old name continued in use for the castle, reflecting its medieval origins.

It originally had four towers — two round and two square — arranged around a central courtyard. Only one round tower and a large residential wing with an attached annex have survived, giving the present structure an L-shape. In recent times, the surviving buildings have been repurposed for public use. The round tower and its wing now house the village school. The neighboring wing was converted into the village library in 2023.

Bellevue-la-Montagne Castle can not be visited. A nice castle remnant in a quiet little village.
