Bierbais Tower

Bierbais Tower, locally known as Tour de Bierbais, stands south of the town of Mont-Saint-Guibert, in the Walloon Brabant province in the Wallonia region in Belgium.

Bierbais Tower is the last remnant of the medieval Bierbais Castle. It probably would have served as a gate tower giving access to an enclosure. It was built in the 12th and 13th century by the Lords of Bierbais, who were named after their main seigniory in Bierbeek, Flemish Brabant. The first 2 levels, built in rubble masonry, date back to that time.

The 3rd level, in brick and white stones, probably dates from the 17th century. The upper 2 levels, in brick and surmounted by a crenelated platform, were added between 1820-1830 together with the small neo-medieval annex on ground level, in rubble masonry. There were also octagonal turrets added but they were removed again in 1907.

A new residential château was built just north of the tower in the 18th century.

At present Bierbais Tower stands in the garden of a private residence and seems to be used for habitation. It is therefore not accessible but can easily be viewed from the public road. A great tower of which I would love to see the interior. Alvaux Tower is close by.
