Carrigacunna Castle

Carrigacunna Castle

Carrigacunna Castle lies east of the village of Killavullen, in County Cork, in Ireland.

Carrigacunna Castle was probably built in the mid-16th century. It was held by the Nagle family. Sir Richard Nagle was an Attorney-General to James II of England in the late 17th century. But after James was defeated in 1690, the castle was forfeited. It was then granted to the Sydney family and later passed to the Foott family. By 1847 it was uninhabited as its owners now lived in the adjacent early-19th century house.

The castle is a rectangular 5-storey tower house, situated near a cliff-edge on the south bank of the Munster Blackwater river. It was last restored in 2018.

According to legend there runs a tunnel to this castle, under the Munster Blackwater, from Monanimy Castle west of it and on the opposite bank of the river.

At present, Carrigacunna Castle is part of a private residence, so it can not be visited. Must be great to be able to call this your home, and now you can! For it is currently for sale, for a mere 2.6 million euros! A very nice castle, sadly enough I visited on a rainy day.
