Chilashvili Castle

Chilashvili Castle lies in the town of Dusheti, in the Dusheti municipality in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in Georgia.

According to an inscription Chilashvili Castle was built in 1800, during the last year of the existence of the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti. It was built by Vakhtang Batonishvili, who went by the name of Chilashvili. He wasn't a nobleman but very rich and powerful nonetheless.

The round keep predates the castle, which was built against its eastern side. The castle has a square ground plan with 2 low round corner towers on its eastern facade which also includes the gate. The buildings include a church and residential and agricultural spaces.

At present Chilashvili Castle holds a Georgian National Museum; the R. Ramishvili Regional Centre for Archaeology, Culture and Education. But when I visited the castle it looked as if the museum had been closed since a very long time. A nice castle.
