Cholokashvili Castle

Cholokashvili Castle, locally also known as Matani Castle, lies in the town of Matani, in the Akhmeta municipality in the Kakheti region in Georgia.

I could not find any historical information about the castle, other than that it was the residence of the noble Cholokashvili family. They were an important family from the 16th century on in Kakheti. So I suspect the castle dates back to around the 17th/18th century. If you know anything more; please mail me.

The castle has a square ground plan with round corner towers and is built on the slope of a hill. Inside there used to be a palace but that has disappeared. Nowadays there is only a small church and a well-kept little park inside its walls.

At present Cholokashvili Castle is freely accessible. It seems to be kept as a town park. A very nice castle.
