Clonea Castle

Clonea Castle

Clonea Castle lies in the townland of the same name, in County Waterford, in Ireland.

The castle is also known as Clonea Power Castle, to distinguish it from a former namesake at the coast near Dungarvan, also Co. Waterford.

Clonea Castle is thought to have been built in 16th century. It was, however, described as being 'out of repair' and uninhabited around 1640. At that time it was owned by J. Lord Power of Curraghmore. It is believed that a bad storm in 1890 destroyed the west and south walls of the tower.

The castle was a rectangular 6-storey tower house, built on a rock outcrop. It used to be surrounded by a ditch, which served as a moat, and equipped with a bawn with flanking towers. Remains of that bawn and the towers may still exist under the thick undergrowth surrounding the tower ruin.

When I visited, Clonea Castle was freely accessible. A striking castle ruin, next to the public road. Be careful of falling masonry.
