Condé-sur-Marne Tower

Tour de Condé-sur-Marne

Condé-sur-Marne Tower, locally known as Tour de Condé-sur-Marne, lies in a field next to the village of the same name in the Marne department in France.

Condé-sur-Marne Tower may look medieval, although also strange with a long structure connected to it, which looks like a bridge to nowhere. Actually it was built in 1869, and was designed as a romantic ruin as was fashionable during the 19th century.

The tower is not a folly but does serve a real purpose, however. It houses a pumping station to pump water through 3 large pipes from the Marne river up to the summit of the Canal de l'Aisne à la Marne. The attached structure is thus a vaulted covered aqueduct constituting the first 150 m of the drain.

The Condé-sur-Marne Tower can freely be visited externally. A curious but esthetically pleasing building.
