Coreixas Tower

Coreixas Tower

The Coreixas Tower, locally known as Torre de Coreixas or Torre de Durigo, stands near the village of Irivo in the Tâmega e Sousa region in Portugal.

The Coreixas Tower stands on a historic estate of the Brandão family. A noble residence is traditionally said to have been founded here in the 13th century by Gonçalo de Arões. The surviving tower is chronologically attributed to the late Middle Ages, most probably the 15th century, although irregularities in the lower masonry suggest an earlier origin. Over subsequent centuries, several modifications were made, notably in the 19th century when a residential wing was added by the Balsemão family.

The tower has a square plan, consists of 3 floors, and is crowned with merlons. It is an example of the late medieval fortified manor towers common in northern Portugal.

Today, the Coreixas Tower is a private property and is not open to the public. It seems to be abandoned. Not a very interesting tower.
