Edire Castle

Edire Castle

Edire Castle, locally known as Edire or Edre Kalesi, lies west of the village of Dörtkonak, in the province of Gümüşhane in Turkey.

I know absolutely nothing about this small castle. I suspect it is of Byzantine or Trapezuntine origin. It may have been known in those times as "Atra", as that was the historical name of the village, before it changed to Edre, and even later to Dörtkonak.

The castle sits on a rocky pinnacle and may have been nothing more than a watch post.

Edire Castle is situated on an inaccessible rock, so it can not be visited. I later read that there should be a path leading to it, but this I did not encounter. Too bad, I would have like to see it more up close.
