Eibenstein Castle

Eibenstein Castle, locally known as Burg Eibenstein, lies near the hamlet of the same name, southeast of the village of Drosendorf an der Thaya in the province of Lower Austria in Austria.
Eibenstein Castle was probably built in the 12th century on a steep rock guarding a crossing of the Thaya river. It was first mentioned in 1194.
Until 1543, the castle was owned by the Eibenstein family; then it was sold to the brothers Christoph and Erasmus von Schneckenreith. Later, it belonged to the lordship of Drosendorf. During the remainder of the 16th century, the castle fell into neglect.
In 1867, the southern facade of the ruin collapsed during a storm and fell into the river below.
The ruin of Eibenstein Castle is freely accessible. A short walk from the road takes you to this nice castle ruin. It's a little off the beaten track.
