Finniterstown Castle

Finniterstown Castle

Finniterstown Castle lies in the townland of the same name, in County Limerick, in Ireland.

When the castle was built is unknown, but probably sometime during the 15th or 16th century. It was once held by the Finniters, hence the name, and passed from the Earl of Kildare to Edward FitzGerald in 1572. By 1655 it was in ruins.

The castle was originally a 5-storey tower house with a bawn. The structure with the round opening, next to it on its north-east side, is a ruined lime kiln, most probably from the 19th century.

When I visited, Finniterstown Castle looked like it was on the grounds of a private residence, Finniterstown House, although I am not sure. It was freely accessible. A small ruin but with lots of architectural details nonetheless. I liked it.
