Fort Caraby

Fort Caraby, locally known as Fort Caraby or Carabit, lies next to the town of Péronne, in the Somme department in France.

Fort Caraby was built just before the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 by military engineers from Péronne, Jean-Pierre and Fidel-Achille Caraby, father and son. It was built on the right bank of the river Somme to protect the southwest approach to the town and to regulate the waters of the lakes here. But the advances in artillery quickly rendered the fortification useless, and already in 1906 it was dismantled. The now inaccessible little island in the river before the fort was also part of the fort.

At present Fort Caraby is part of a municipal park and its remains are freely accessible. A curious fort and because it is so much overgrown its layout is difficult to see. Péronne Castle is nearby.
