Gaber Castle

The remnant of Gaber Castle, locally known as Gaberkirche, lies east of the village of Nonndorf bei Raabs, in the province of Lower Austria in Austria.

Gaber Castle was built around 1300 by the Lords of Gaber. They were just an insignificant family and therefore the military importance of the castle will not have been very big. A Bernhard von Gaber was mentioned in 1327 as lord for the first time. The last Lord of Gaber; Georg, was mentioned in 1405. In the late 15th century the castle was already described as being dilapidated.

In 1551 the ruins of Gaber Castle were sold to the local community of Luden by Margarethe von Schneckenreith.

What remains of the castle is mainly the ruined castle chapel. Therefore it is often better known as the Gaber Church.

At present Gaber Castle can be visited freely. It is situated in a small forest with only a dirt road leading up to it. A small ruin, more of the castle chapel than the castle itself. But still a nice little ruin.
