Haştırın Castle

Haştırın Castle

Haştırın Castle, locally known as Haştırın/Haçtırın Kalesi, is located near the village of Torun in the province of Kahramanmaraş in Turkey.

The castle is situated in Cilicia, a region that was part of an Armenian kingdom from the late 11th century to the late 14th century. Like most fortifications in this area, neither its medieval name nor its history is known.

Haştırın Castle sits on an isolated rocky spur, a commanding position at the junction of two valleys, overlooking a stream. This naturally defensible and strategic location allowed control over routes connecting the Ceyhan valley with the interior mountain passes of the Taurus Mountains. It may have functioned as an advanced outpost for the larger Ak Castle, located just about 5 km up the road toward Andırın.

The available architectural evidence suggests a Byzantine origin, likely dating from the period when the empire reinforced its eastern frontier with a network of small fortifications controlling key passes and valley routes. Subsequent modifications to the masonry indicate that the site may have been reused or adapted during the Armenian period, as was common throughout Cilicia in the 12th–13th centuries.

Haştırın is a compact fortification, with a simple quadrangular plan, adapted to the irregular shape of the rock. The entrance was located on the northern side.

From what I observed, the ruin of Haştırın Castle appears to be inaccessible. A potential path to its entrance seemed to be blocked by a fenced-off area managed by the local highway authority. A nice, small castle ruin.
