Liam Lynch Monument

Liam Lynch Monument

The Liam Lynch Monument stands in the Knockmealdown Mountains, in the townland of Crohan, in County Tipperary, in Ireland.

This tower was built as a memorial on the spot where the Chief of Staff of the Irish Republican Army, General Liam Lynch, is thought to have been fatally shot by soldiers from the National Army on April 10, 1923, during the Irish War of Independance. He was trying to evade capture together with 6 comrades.

It was erected in 1935 through voluntary labor by his former comrades and supporters. The design of the monument was inspired by early medieval Irish Round Towers. The 18 meters high tower is guarded by 4 bronze wolfhounds.

The Liam Lynch Monument can freely be visited. It is a popular hiking destination and from its location you have great views of the surrounding area.
