Licklash Castle

Licklash Castle

Licklash Castle lies in the townland of the same name, northeast of the town of Fermoy, in County Cork, in Ireland.

Licklash Castle probably started out as a hall house, dating back to the 13th century. In the 16th century, a tower house was built, partly over the north wall of the hall house. The tower house belonged to the Roche family. It passed to the Hendleys in the 17th century.

The castle was built on a cliff overlooking the Munster Blackwater. What remains today is the ruin of the square 5-storey tower house and part of the east wall of the earlier hall house.

Licklash Castle is situated on private land and can thus not be visited. It can only be partly seen from afar, from the public road north of it. A very nice small castle.
