Manning Castle

Manning Castle

Manning Castle lies in the Labbacallee townland, in County Cork, in Ireland.

I don't know anything about the history of this ruin, other than that it was called Manning Castle on 2 online maps. If you know anything, please mail me.

According to the Irish National Monuments Service, this was a country house built in the late 17th/early 18th century, which in the early 20th century was called "Manor House".

The ruin is situated in a sloping field, overlooking the River Funshion. It consists of only 2 gables, standing to their full height, of a rectangular building. The middle section has completely disappeared.

So, this was clearly never a castle, as it lacks any defensive features. Also, I think its name is the result of a confusion, as there is a Manning House (also a country house, dating back to the same era) on the opposite bank of the river.

Manning Castle can not be visited, nor be seen from the public road, as it is on private property behind a farm. I did like its solitary appearance. South of it, directly next to the road, in front of the farm, is the Labbacallee wedge tomb, which is the largest wedge tomb in Ireland.
