Marigny-le-Cahouët Castle

Château de Marigny-le-Cahouët

Marigny-le-Cahouët Castle, locally known as Château de Marigny-le-Cahouët, lies next to the village of the same name in the Côte-d'Or department in France.

Marigny-le-Cahouët Castle was first mentioned in 1189 when Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy, gave it to his son Alexander, Lord of Montaigu. The castle was probably built earlier that century. During the next centuries the castle was turned into a fortress by its consecutive owners; amongst them the Villars, the La Beaume, the Avancourt and the Orgemont families.

In 1608 the castle was acquired by the Pibrac family. They then had the castle completely overhauled to turn it into a comfortable residence. The medieval castle originally had a keep within its walls. Maybe it disappeared during this overhaul. The castle we see today is mainly the result of this rebuilding phase. Later it was again owned by several families; amongst them the Villaines and the Siraudins. The Siraudins had it restored during the 19th century.

In 1962 the castle was acquired by the Rougé family, who still own it to this day.

At present Marigny-le-Cahouët Castle is a private residence and thus can not be visited. A very nice castle, I especially like the roof tiles.
