Miaucourt Castle

Miaucourt Castle, locally known as Château de Miaucourt, lies in the town of Courcelles, in the province of Hainaut in the Wallonia region in Belgium.

This of course is no real castle. It started out as a mere, 19th century, hunting lodge of the Drion family. The Drions, who were wealthy forge masters, rebuilt the lodge into the present Miaucourt Castle in the mid-19th century.

In the beginning of the 20th century there was an expulsion of religious congregations from France. The castle then became a female boarding school by the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. During its time as a boarding school, a chapel was added to the castle.

Later during the 20th century the castle was abandoned. At some point it was occupied by squatters and partly destroyed by a fire. In 2001 the castle fell prey to a fire for a second time. Later it was rebuilt and is now used for social housing.

Not a very interesting 'castle' but I still do like the appearance of the tower.
