Montfort Castle

Cocu Castle

Montfort Castle, locally known as Château de Montfort, lies above the village of Vernet-la-Varenne in the Puy-de-Dôme department in France.

The construction date of this castle, which stands on a volcanic outcrop overlooking the surrounding countryside and the artificial Vernet Lake, is unknown. The noble family of Vernet is documented as owning the site since at least 1150. This knightly family produced eight members who were admitted to the chapter of the Abbey of Brioude, but their records disappear in the 1370s. Montfort Castle is generally believed to have medieval origins, probably from the 12th century, and was later remodeled, especially in the 17th century, when it was converted for residential use.

Local tradition links the castle to Margaret of Valois, Queen consort of France in the late 1500s. According to legend, while imprisoned at Usson, she supposedly had various romantic adventures, one of which led her to a castle overlooking Vernet. She is said to have named it “Mon Fort” in memory of the impression it made on her. However, this story is more folklore than verified history.

The main building with its four towers, possibly incorporating an earlier keep, stands at the center of the courtyard.

Today, Montfort Castle is owned by the municipality and serves cultural purposes. On the ground floor, it houses a small museum about regional geology called "La Maison de l’Améthyste." The upper floors are used for temporary exhibitions. When I visited, only the geology museum was open. I love how the castle looks.
