Nutjak Castle

Nutjak Castle

Nutjak Castle, locally known as Utvrda Nutjak, lies south of the village of Gardun, in the county of Split-Dalmatia in Croatia.

Nutjak Castle was built at the end of the 15th century by Žarko Dražojević, Duke of Poljica. In 1492, Pope Innocent VIII allocated resources collected during a pilgrimage to Klis and Sinj for the upkeep of Nutjak.

Although the castle, perched on a cliff above the right bank of the Cetina River, served to protect the historical county of Poljica from Ottoman incursions, it was already conquered by them in the early 16th century. It remained in Ottoman hands until 1685, when it was seized from them during the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War. The castle was destroyed during this conflict and was never rebuilt.

Nutjak Castle is freely accessible. It can be easily reached by driving down a dirt road, then taking a short walk through the woods. A scenic, solitary castle ruin in a great location.
