Obras do Fidalgo

The Obras do Fidalgo ruin lies in the village of Vila Boa de Quires in the Tâmega e Sousa region in Portugal.
Its name, "Obras do Fidalgo," translates to "Works of the Nobleman." It is also known as "Casa Inacabada de Vila Boa de Quires," meaning "Unfinished House of Vila Boa de Quires."
Construction started in 1740, during the height of Portuguese Baroque and Rococo architecture, and was financed by Antonio de Vasconcelos de Carvalho e Menezes. The residence was intended as a grand manorial house but was never completed. Heritage records and local tradition suggest two possible reasons for the project's abandonment: the death of the, allegedly Spanish, architect in 1756, reportedly due to a fall from the top of the building during works, or simply the lack of financial resources needed to continue such an ambitious project. Though documentation is limited, the sudden halt left the structure unfinished, and it has remained unchanged.
The main façade, approximately 60 meters long, is arranged over 2 floors in a clear, symmetrical layout. Since construction stopped early, only this façade and fragments of the side walls were fully developed; interior spaces and rear structures were never realized. Despite being incomplete, it displays exceptional craftsmanship, especially in the central section, which was likely intended to be the main entrance.
Today, the Obras do Fidalgo ruin is freely accessible and situated at the edge of a small forest. It is a very atmospheric ruin with beautiful ornamental details.
