Partskhisi Castle

Partskhisi Castle lies next to the village of the same name, in the Tetritsqaro municipality in the Kvemo Kartli region in Georgia.

Partskhisi Castle was first mentioned in the 11th century. It was probably built during the 9th or 10th century. Archaeological excavations showed that the hill had already been built upon some 3000 years ago.

The castle was located on one of the main roads through Kvemo Kartli, near the confluence of the Algeti River with a smaller stream. It consisted of a castle with a bailey on an elongated hill. Nothing remains of the bailey but a small church. It is said that within the castle grounds there is an entrance to a tunnel that would lead down to the river. Apparently this entrance was closed with rocks to prevent people going in and hurting themselves.

At present Partskhisi Castle is freely accessible. When I visited there was a group of local youth from Tetri Tsqaro having a camping weekend in the castle. Apart from a couple of wall parts, there isn't much to see here. Also the remains don't give much architectural detail. But the views and the nice small church on the bailey still make it a nice place to visit.
