Peigarten Castle

Peigarten Castle, locally known as Schloss Peigarten, lies in the village of Peigarten an der Thaya, in the province of Lower Austria in Austria.
Peigarten Castle was first mentioned in 1200, but dates back to the 11th century. Then it was owned by the Peigartner family. It was built as a frontier fortress to protect the northern border of the Duchy of Austria against Bohemia and Moravia. It was part of a string of fortifications along the Thaya River.
In 1386, the castle went to the Taxner family.
Abbot Cornelius, from the Lilienfeld Abbey, acquired the castle in 1644. The abbey then installed a dairy, a sheep farm, a tavern, a brewery, and a brandy distillery in and around the castle.
In 1809, Peigarten Castle was bought by Philipp Ferdinand von Grünne, Count of Pinchard and a Cavalry General. Later during that century, several other owners followed, and for a period, it housed a carpet factory. Finally, the castle was bought in 1978 by the Wolfer family, who restored it.
At present, Peigarten Castle is a private residence and can therefore only be visited by appointment.
