Petit-Geroldseck Castle

Petit-Geroldseck Castle, locally known as Château du Petit-Geroldseck, lies on a mountain west of the village of Haegen, in the Bas-Rhin department in France. This area is also known as the Northern Alsace or the Middle Vosges.

Petit-Geroldseck Castle was built sometime during the 13th or early 14th century. It was first mentioned in 1349. Its builders were co-owners of Grand-Geroldseck Castle who apparently wanted to distance themselves from the others and thus built this new castle, only some 500 meters south from the old castle.

Not much is known about its history as it was closely tied to that of Grand-Geroldseck. When in 1471 Grand-Geroldseck Castle was destroyed because it had become a den of robber knights, Petit-Geroldseck was probably already abandoned. By 1507 it was described as a ruin.

At present Petit-Geroldseck Castle can freely be visited. This is a small ruin, a nice visit together with Grand-Geroldseck.
