Posanges Castle

Château de Posanges

Posanges Castle, locally known as Château de Posanges, lies in the village of the same name in the Côte-d'Or department in France.

A castle in the village of Posanges was already mentioned in 1299. It is not certain if that castle was situated at the same site as the present one. The present castle was built by Guillaume du Bois in the mid-15th century.

Guillaume had begun his career as a squire, first of John I the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, and later to John's son; Philip III the Good, who followed his father as Duke of Burgundy. By 1429 Guillaume had become bailiff of Auxois and in 1437 was given the lordship of Posanges. He then had the castle built as his fortified home between 1440 and 1445.

Posanges castle, a square moated enclosure with round towers at its four corners but without a keep, apparently had a rather calm life, as it was generally kept in its 15th century condition.

Between 1964 and 1974 the castle was used as a fabric factory. Since then it has been restored and turned into a private home.

At present Posanges Castle is a private residence and thus can not be visited. A beautiful castle, too bad it can not be visited.
