Rathnaseer Castle

Rathanaseer Castle, sometimes also spelled as Rathnasaer, lies in a field in the townland of Rathnaseer, in County Limerick, in Ireland.
Probably dating back to the 15th or first half of the 16th century, the castle was a Desmond property. It was granted to the Billingsleys in 1588, as the Earls of Desmond lost their possessions after their rebellion. In 1599, it was here in Rathnaseer that Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, proclaimed James FitzGerald as Earl of Desmond. Around 1655 it was still noted as a possession of a Thomas FitzGerald of Rathnaseer.
The castle, or more correctly a tower house, has a rectangular plan and would originally have had at least 3 stories.
Rathnaseer Castle is situated on private farmland and can not be visited, but can easily be seen from the passing public road. A nice tower ruin.
