Sillavengo Castle

Sillavengo Castle

Sillavengo Castle, locally known as Castello di Sillavengo, lies in the village of the same name, in the Novara province in the Piedmont region in Italy.

Although Sillavengo is called a castle and may look like one, it isn't a real castle. There was a real medieval castle in the village but nothing remains of it.

The present 'castle' is a manor built around the turn of the 16th to the 17th century. It was a residence of the noble Caccia family who had been made feudal Lords of Sillavengo by the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Sforza, in 1483. Later it passed to the Gimilini family.

During the mid-18th century the manor was used as a school. During the 19th century fake battlements were added to its facade to give the structure a castle-like appearance. Since then it was known as 'the castle' to the locals.

At present Sillavengo Castle is a 4-star hotel-restaurant. A curious building.
