Sonković Castle

Sonković Castle

Sonković Castle, locally known as Utvrda or Kula Sonković, lies north of the village of the same name, in the county of Šibenik-Knin in Croatia.

Not much is known about the history of this castle. The only facts are that it dates back to the early Middle Ages and that it was the seat of the local Sonković family, who also gave their name to the village. The castle and village became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1528, which is also when the Sonković family died out.

As with the rest of the wider area, it remained under Ottoman control until 1684, after which it fell under Venetian rule until 1794. It is unclear whether either of these parties used Sonković Castle.

The castle is situated on a rocky ridge next to the entrance of a small canyon. Beneath the castle is a natural spring whose water flows through the canyon before draining into nearby Lake Prokljan.

Sonković Castle is freely accessible, but there is no clear path to it. Visitors will need to scramble up the rocky hill through the bushes to reach it.
