Vergano Castle

Vergano Castle

Vergano Castle, locally known as Castello di Vergano, lies in the town of Borgomanero, in the Novara province in the Piedmont region in Italy.

According to tradition Vergano Castle was founded by Giovanni Luigi Tornielli in 1283. Other sources however state that it first belonged to the Brusati and Cavallazzi families and that it was taken from them by the Tornielli family after 1312. It was however first mentioned in the 14th century when it was the home of Calcino Tornielli who was involved in a plot against Azzone Visconti, Lord of Milan, in 1339.

In the 2nd half of the 14th century the castle suffered from an attack by English mercenaries. The castle changed hands between several members of the Tornielli family for several centuries. They restructured the castle between 1470 and 1474 and added the gate tower. In 1585 they carried out further renovations.

In 1636 Vergano Castle was occupied by French troops which seriously damaged it. Afterwards the Torniellis repaired the damage. They held the castle at least until the late 18th century.

The castle is situated on the Vergano Hill and looks out over Borgomanero.

The structure of Vergano Castle is divided up into 4 separate private residences, so it can not be visited. A nice castle.
