Al Awabi Castle

Al Awabi Castle

Al Awabi Castle, often also called a fort, lies in the town of the same name in the Al Batinah South Governorate in Oman.

The castle of Al Awabi was built next to a wadi, around 1800, and guarded the entrance to the fertile Wadi Bani Kharus, while also protecting the town. It as also served as the residence of the local 'wali' (governor). In 2008 it was restored. This is all I was able to find about this fortification. If you know more, please mail me.

The castle has a square ground plan with round towers at diagonally opposite corners. The tower with the complete stone facing is called Al Sarookh Tower.

Apparently Al Awabi Castle can be visited, but it was closed when I came by. Too bad. A nice castle on a scenic location.
