Dunnaman Castle

Dunnaman Castle

Dunnaman Castle lies in the townland of the same name, in County Limerick, in Ireland.

Dunnaman Castle was built sometime during the 16th century. In 1571, it was inhabited by the De Lacys after which it passed to the Thornton family before passing to the Ormsbys in 1666. Nothing more is known about its history.

The castle now consists of a rectangular tower house, 3-storeys high, although it may have been higher. It has some nicely decorated windows. There is also a sheela-na-gig some 5 meters high up on the east wall. Reputedly, it is the largest sheela-na-gig in Ireland. The castle is now standing empty.

Dunnaman Castle is situated in a farmyard and thus can not be visited, but the farmer's family kindly allowed me to walk around and take some pictures. A nice tower, mainly because of the architectural details.
